As the Brexit transition period came to an end on 31 December 2020, Recofloor, the national vinyl flooring take-back scheme founded by flooring manufacturers Polyflor and Altro in 2009, have been closely monitoring the changes in waste legislation to minimize the disruption of the service for our members in Ireland.
The scheme has been operating for over 10 years enabling contractors and fitters to drop off small volumes of vinyl flooring at flooring distributor Provisional Floorcovering Limited (PFL) at their three sites in Limerick, Dublin and Belfast. Recofloor is deeply sorry to announce the suspension of the drop-off facility at the Limerick and Dublin sites with immediate effect.
This difficult decision was reached after carefully considering the recent changes to the Basel Convention in relation to transporting PVC waste from Ireland back to the UK, where the material is processed for recycling. More details about the waste regulations can be found on the government website.
The scheme will continue to operate within the UK and therefore we will be able to continue to provide the collection service from Belfast, meaning that contractors will be able to drop-off vinyl waste at PFL, Belfast premises once the Recofloor drop-off point is reopened at this location.
We ask all local contractors to keep in touch with PFL for further updates on when the scheme will resume at this site.
We want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who participated in the scheme and for their efforts to divert vinyl flooring waste from landfill. During the time Recofloor was deployed at the three site of PFL, the scheme diverted 44.6 tonnes of vinyl waste, which means a CO2 saving equal to taking 14 cars off the road for a year.
