  • Midlands Flooring – ‘Recycling with Recofloor is worth doing’

Growing numbers of flooring contractors, such as Midlands Flooring, are recognising the benefits of participating in Recofloor and using the UK’s vinyl flooring recycling scheme to collect, return and recycle material from all kinds of construction projects.

The Nuneaton-based commercial flooring contractor signed up to the scheme after being invited to the Recofloor 2018 Awards Event by their distributor MCD Kidderminster. Shortly afterwards, the firm used the scheme for the first time on a major student accommodation refurbishment project in Birmingham during the summer break.

More than 700sqm (16 rolls) of Altro Wood Safety flooring was specified for the refurbishment of 96 flats at the University of Birmingham’s Aitken Buildings in Edgbaston. Upgrading of the three apartment blocks included new vinyl flooring in the kitchen areas.

Fitters collected the vinyl installation offcuts in Recofloor site bags supplied by MCD Kidderminster. Full bags were taken back to Midlands Flooring’s premises from where they were collected by MCD Kidderminster. A total of 23 bags of installation offcuts – one from each kitchen – were recycled from the project.

    Comments

Niall from MCD introduced me to the Recofloor scheme through my invitation to the 2018 Awards Event. Having listened to what people were saying, I think that we should have joined the scheme years ago! I felt that recycling the waste flooring was something we should be involved in as we do a lot of vinyl work. Previously we were landfilling offcuts in mixed waste skips, so it will be interesting to see how much we can save on skips and disposal costs. Recofloor is worth doing for the recycling element, as waste material goes back into new flooring, and for the environment. That’s got to be good news all round.”
Jeremy Redfern, Contracts Manager at Midlands Flooring
We had been discussing with Midlands Flooring how Recofloor could work for them. When Jeremy attended the Awards Event and heard how everyone was so enthusiastic about the scheme, it completely won him over. It’s easy, perhaps, to talk about how Recofloor works, but if you can see the recycling happen, it’s far more tangible!
Niall Kinsella, Contracts Manager at MCD Kidderminster
Midlands Flooring is a great example of how more and more contractors are choosing to take part in Recofloor, helping them to save money – and the environment
    Joe Gardner, Recofloor Project Officer
