  • Flooring Solutions NI – Using Recofloor on School Projects in Ireland

Flooring Solutions NI makes the grade with Recofloor

Flooring Solutions NI, one of Northern Ireland’s leading contract flooring specialists, is certainly making the grade as one of Recofloor’s newest members after collecting around 100 bulk bags of waste vinyl flooring for recycling in the first six months.

While much of this material has come from school projects, the Belfast-based company also works with a number of major contractors on diverse refurbishment schemes, including hotels, shops, restaurants and airports.

Flooring Solutions NI signed up to the UK’s vinyl flooring recycling initiative in August 2013 after acknowledging the environmental benefits of recycling, versus landfilling, their waste material. It now promotes their Recofloor connection and the green credentials of recycling when working with all new contractors on site.

Working with main contractor Graham Facilities Management, Flooring Solutions NI collected a total of 14.25 tonnes of smooth uplifted flooring and installation offcuts during a major five-month refurbishment project at Belfast’s St. Gerard’s Education Resource Centre.

Around 7,000 square metres of vinyl flooring was uplifted at the former secondary school turned specialist education facility. This material, plus installation offcuts from new flooring, was collected by apprentices and stored in bags on pallets before collection by Recofloor.

Collected material is sent back to flooring manufacturers and Recofloor founders, Altro and Polyflor for further processing. Clean offcuts are reprocessed back into new vinyl flooring. Smooth uplifted flooring is used to make traffic management products such as traffic cone bases and speed bumps.

Flooring Solutions NI initially deposited their full bags with their local distributor. Now, it stores up to around 20 bulk bags at its own premises prior to the dedicated Recofloor collections, keeping the material protected and helping to maintain a higher quality for subsequent recycling.

Convinced of the merits of the scheme, the company is now focussing on persuading more contractors to join them on their vinyl flooring journey and extend the environmental benefits throughout the wider construction community.

    Comments

Joining Recofloor was very much an environmentally-based decision for us. Before we were paying for skips and just landfilling the waste flooring. When we approach new contractors, we tell them we’re part of Recofloor and ask if we can agree on a recycling strategy to promote our green credentials – and theirs. Although there is a small collection cost with Recofloor, recycling this material is the right thing to do and we recycle as much as we can. When we call the Recofloor team to arrange a collection, there are never any issues and everything is very well organised.

As one of our newest Recofloor members, Flooring Solutions NI has made an admirable start and is demonstrating an excellent commitment to the scheme.
