MacGregor Flooring Company Ltd - Recofloor builds the case for recycling on construction projects

    Download Case Study (pdf)

Recofloor makes the perfect partner on construction projects of all sizes. Wherever vinyl flooring waste arises, from schools and universities to hospitals, residential or commercial sites, material can be collected efficiently through the UK’s national award-winning take-back scheme and recycled for use in new flooring or other products.

Founded by Polyflor and Altro in 2009 to divert waste vinyl flooring from landfill, Recofloor provides a win-win solution for contractors and clients alike. It’s a sustainable and environmentally-friendly option that offers up to 70% savings on disposal costs. To date, more than 2,300 tonnes has been recycled through Recofloor and volumes continue to grow*.

Hamish MacGregor, Managing Director of Hamilton-based MacGregor Flooring Company Ltd is a staunch advocate of Recofloor, having signed up to the scheme in its earliest days.

His company won the Construction Project of the Year Award at the 2015 Recofloor Awards for collecting more than 14 tonnes of waste vinyl from the new £90 million West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven.

Crucial to the project’s success was effective communication that built good working relationships between all parties and ensured efficient, regular collections from site – a total of 40 bins containing installation off-cuts.

MacGregor Flooring Company installed a total of 20,000 square metres of Polyflor and Altro vinyl flooring over an eight-month phased timescale, with the bulk of the work being carried out between July and September 2014. This also included extensive preparation work.

The company had proposed Recofloor for the hospital scheme, having successfully used a similar vinyl off-cuts collection method for a contract at the Balfour Beatty Construction Crime Campus at Gartcosh in Scotland.

All PVC skirting and sheet vinyl off-cuts were stored in Recofloor large wheeled bins, which were collected on a regular basis by Polyflor for recycling. Having carried out many other similar projects for Laing O’Rourke over the years, MacGregor Flooring Company benefited from the main contractor’s co-operation in helping the recycling process to run smoothly.

Laing O’Rourke’s telehandler was used to move the recycling bins up the sloping site to the top of the hill where they were loaded onto the Polyflor truck after it had dropped off new vinyl deliveries. Assistance by the site manager played a crucial role in ensuring full bins were correctly position and ready for collections around every two weeks.

*Recofloor tonnes were correct when the case study was published. For the most up to date figures, please contact the Recofloor team 0161 355 7618.

    Comments

Important aspects of the project included practical considerations, such as ensuring full bins were accessible for collection and notifying us when a flooring delivery was expected so we could schedule replacement bins. As the project progressed, we built up a very good working relationship and scheduling collections became easier as both parties understood and appreciated each other’s situation. Recofloor provides positive benefits all round in diverting waste vinyl flooring from landfill and we are keen to work with more main contractors on construction projects.
    Jane Gardner, Recofloor Project Manager
At the pre- award stage, we were asked about recycling. It’s a big thing now. We believe that recycling is the way forward on all contracts as it eliminates the need for landfill and associated high disposal costs. It also ticks all the boxes for the main contractors who are willing to participate. They get a lot of credence out of it. When they move onto other contracts they can show what they did with the specialist contractors to recycle waste products, such as flooring.
