  • Rudge Brothers & James – Going for Gold

For Recofloor members, the annual Awards Event not only celebrates their considerable waste vinyl flooring achievements but it also helps to fire their enthusiasm to do more!

Going for Gold ‘recycling’ success with Recofloor

A great example of this is Rudge Brothers and James Ltd, one of the UK’s premier floor coverings and hygienic wall cladding contractors.

Having won a Bronze Award in 2015, the Bristol-based company clinched a Silver Award and third place in the Greatest Improver category the following year.

Evidence of tangible improvement has inspired the commercial flooring specialist to ‘go for gold’ in 2017. Having fully embraced the Recofloor scheme, the management team is putting in place ongoing training for all its office-based staff and fitting teams to ensure full understanding of how it works.

This commitment includes inviting the Recofloor team to its Bristol headquarters for an overview of the scheme, crucially covering the specifications for uplifted waste vinyl flooring and installation offcuts. Meeting the correct specifications for what can – and cannot be accepted – is vital for maximising the materials’ recycling by Polyflor and Altro, which founded the scheme in 2009.

Since joining Recofloor in the early days, Rudge Brothers and James has incorporated the scheme into its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) approach and regularly offers the service to clients, particularly on larger projects.

All their fitters are given Recofloor bags to collect installation offcuts on site, which are then transferred to larger bulk bags at their premises prior to collection on a regular basis.

Recognising the importance of investing in its personnel, the company is also working towards ‘Investors in People’ accreditation over the coming months.

This year, our target is to go from Silver to Gold. Even if it’s only in the ‘Most Improved’ category, we are keen to keep improving. It gives everyone in the office something to aim for; it’s not just the boys on-site, it’s company-wide. With Recofloor guidance, off we go! The small collection cost far outweighs that of landfilling waste vinyl flooring. For us it’s more a case of doing the right thing: if doing the right thing saves us money as well, then why wouldn’t anybody and everybody do it. That’s the whole point of Recofloor – it makes sense financially as well as for the CSR element. Presentations at the Recofloor Awards Event are a great inspiration and encouragement for all of us to do our bit for the environment. As an industry, we’ve got to get smarter and work together to encourage greater sustainability. Recofloor helps us to do that.
Jim Heal, Sales and Contracts Director
Knowing the right material specifications is important for collectors, so we’re always happy to help with any queries and extra training.
