  • Contractors Case Study

Flooring contractors form the ‘backbone’ of Recofloor’s large and growing nationwide membership and are crucial to collecting the volumes of waste material that contribute to the UK’s vinyl flooring recycling scheme’s success.

Recofloor helps flooring contractors to ‘go that extra mile’.

Many of them, like specialist flooring contractor Mayfield Floors who signed up to Recofloor in 2009, are long-standing participants in the scheme that champions sustainability throughout the flooring supply chain.

Founded by leading flooring manufacturers Polyflor and Altro in 2009 to divert waste vinyl flooring from landfill, Recofloor collects post-installation flooring and off-cuts from a wide variety of projects in diverse sectors, from healthcare to education. The majority of collections are from flooring contractors.

Every year, the Recofloor Awards celebrate the effort and commitment made by members. The Contractor of the Year category recognises those companies that, regardless of their size, are integral to the scheme and regularly attracts the most entries.

Stockport-based Mayfield Floors took the 2015 Contractor of the Year trophy for its unwavering dedication to the scheme by collecting material to Recofloor specifications, thereby contributing to the scheme’s on-going success. They also won this category in 2013.

In 2014 the firm collected 18 tonnes of waste vinyl for recycling – equivalent to 6,000m² of flooring that would cover one football pitch.

Mayfield Floors offers a full flooring supply and install, install or supply-only service to its predominantly commercial clients, such as local authorities, housing associations, NHS Trusts, housebuilders, property developers and large private landlords.

As part of its commitment to ‘go that extra mile’ to meet its customers’ needs and exceed expectations, Mayfield Floors uses Recofloor wherever possible on its projects and stores waste vinyl at its premises prior to collection.

The whole company is involved with Recofloor, which is an integral part of their waste management activities and is actively promoted throughout their business – from inclusion in van liveries to appearing on client estimates. Fitters receive toolbox talks on the importance of the scheme from Facilities Manager Adam Kelly.

    Comments

Participating in Recofloor has reduced our waste disposal costs as well as the amount of material we send to landfill. The collection services are efficient and it’s good to be doing our bit for the environment by sending back recyclable material for recycling. Recofloor has helped us to win new clients and importantly reduce costs: the scheme is now an integral part of our waste management. All our vinyl waste is brought back to our premises so it can be segregated correctly and recycled. We actively promote Recofloor throughout our business, whether it’s to our clients, managers or apprentices.”
    Anthony Francis, Managing Director
introduced Toolbox Talks to new fitters after finding it was helpful in clarifying the scheme’s specifications. When the material is returned to us by the fitters, if I discover any contamination I remove it and make an effort to track down who’s responsible and explain what they need to do. After taking over responsibility for the Recofloor scheme from our founder Eric Francis (who gained a Silver Award for championing the scheme), Adam was taught the value of the scheme from a cost-saving standpoint and has seen it as a fundamental way of reducing our overheads.
    Adam Kelly, Facilities Manager
Contractors have embraced the scheme and we’re delighted that more and more are choosing to participate, helping them to save money – and the environment. Mayfield Floors is a valued member of the scheme, always working hard to return clean vinyl suitable for recycling. They also promote the scheme to their fitters to ensure that the material is free from contamination. A deserved winner this year’s Contractor of the Year Award!
    Carla Eslava, Recofloor Project Officer
